Jurgen Klopp has said the Thursday-Sunday schedule is ‘not great’ for Liverpool this season as his side look for success in an ‘intense’ campaign.
Liverpool missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time during Klopp’s reign last season, with Europa League football having a direct impact on the club’s Premier League schedule.
Having beaten Toulouse in Europe on Thursday evening, the Reds next host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday and Klopp has opened up on the different demands his team are facing this season.
“The Thursday-Sunday is not great, but it’s something we know for long enough and that’s fine. We are training in between, the boys who didn’t play [against Toulouse] will have a proper session tomorrow so that’s good,” the German told his pre-match press conference.
“If we play always the same team like maybe we did in the past in the Champions League then there is no training at all, it’s just recover and go again.
“Because we don’t have too many injuries it is still ok in the moment and hopefully it stays like that. It means a lot of players who didn’t play [against Toulouse] will start on Sunday.
“This rhythm is the rhythm we have this year and we should get used to it sooner rather than later. A Premier League season with European football and all the cup competitions is an intense season, we never had a problem with that. As long as you can have a specific amount of recovery time we are ready again.”
