Luton vs Liverpool – Premier League Match Preview

Strugglers Luton look for their first home win as they host in-form Liverpool at Kenilworth Road in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Hatters currently sit in the relegation zone and have only one point from four home matches in the Premier League while the Reds have lost just once in all competitions this season.

Here’s all you need to know about this Sunday’s fixture.

Form

Luton: WLLDL

The Premier League newcomers were the lowest spenders in the summer transfer window. Their £20m spend was £17m less than the next lowest club, Everton, as the Hatters opted to sign free agents such as Ross Barkley and Andros Townsend.

Rob Edwards’ men have conceded an average of two goals a game since returning to the top flight and have just one win to their name, 2-1 away to Everton, but the play-off winners have looked dangerous going forward.

Carlton Morris is their top scorer with three goals and the Hatters’ nine goals is more than 13th place Crystal Palace.

Luton fell to a 3-1 defeat to high-flying Aston Villa last time out and were outclassed by Unai Emery’s men, managing just one shot on target and just 29% possession.

Defender Amari’i Bell should be back in contention for selection following a thigh injury, but this fixture may be too soon for Reece Burke, Albert Sambi-Lokonga and Jordan Clark, who all remain out.

Liverpool: DWWWW

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been flying on all fronts, top with three wins from three in the Europa League, still active in the EFL Cup, and fourth in the Premier League, just three points off leaders Tottenham with just one defeat to their name.

The Reds enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in their last league outing as Dominik Szoboszlai picked up his first two assists since joining from RB Leipzig this summer.

Mohamed Salah was once again on the scoresheet. The Egyptian winger has now scored five goals in his last three league games, following braces against Brighton and Everton. Only Erling Haaland has scored more than the 31-year-old’s eight in the league.

The Reds are without left-back Andy Robertson, who will be out until the new year with a shoulder issue, and it is unclear whether Luis Diaz will feature amid the winger’s ongoing family issue back in Colombia.

Last Meeting

Liverpool 5-0 Luton, January 15th 2008

Given Luton Town’s inspiring rise from the National League to the Premier League in little more than a decade, it’s no surprise you have to go back 15 years for the last meeting between the two sides.

The two teams haven’t been in the same league since they both competed in the 1991/92 First Division, but then League One Luton met Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool in an FA Cup third round replay back in 2008.

After a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road, the reds fielded a strong team which consisted of Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in what was Carragher’s 500th appearance for the club.

The Merseyside outfit ran out 5-0 winners as Gerrard scored a second half hat-trick, but it took until the 45th minute for Liverpool to make a breakthrough through Ryan Babel.

Finnish defender Sami Hyypia scored the other goal to set up a tie against Havant and Waterlooville. Luton finished the season bottom of League One.
