Jurgen Klopp has said that Luis Diaz will make the decision on his return for Liverpool as the winger deals with ongoing family issues in Colombia.
Diaz has missed Liverpool’s recent fixtures after the news that the 26-year-old’s family had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Colombia. The Colombian government have said that Diaz’s father was kidnapped by left-wing rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN).
Diaz’s mother was also involved in the initial kidnap, but was left behind as the kidnappers fled with her husband as police closed in.
Officials have since held peace talks with the kidnappers, who have reportedly said that Díaz’s father will be freed in the coming days, according to the BBC.
Klopp was asked whether Diaz will be available for this weekend’s trip to face Luton in the Premier League and said he will not force the winger’s return, insisting any decision on availability will be made by the Liverpool star.
“We just wait to see where we can pick the boy up from and go from there,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.
“It’s all about him, that he makes himself available or not, and I don’t want to force anything.
“He was in training two days ago, yesterday he did a session, and he will be part of the team.
“If he feels right, he will train with us. When he’s with the boys he’s fine but you can tell he hasn’t slept a lot. We will wait to see how he is and go from there.
“The news – I didn’t personally get from Colombia, I always get it forwarded – but everything that gives us a bit of hope is good. We are waiting for really good news.”
