Liverpool missed the chance to secure their place in the Europa League knockout rounds after losing 3-2 at Toulouse.
The Reds could have confirmed their place in the knockout stages with a positive result in France, having opened their European campaign with three consecutive group wins.
However, a below-par performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side saw Liverpool suffer a setback in their bid to secure Europa League progress.
Aron Donnum set the French side – 14th in Ligue 1 – on their way to an upset win after robbing Kostas Tsimikas of possession, before Thijs Dallinga doubled the host’s lead with a rifled finish just before the hour.
Liverpool pulled a goal back in strange circumstances after a bizarre own goal from Cristian Casseres Jr, but Toulouse responded instantly to restore their two-goal advantage. Frank Magri fired in a rebound after Caoimhín Kelleher could only parry a cross into the forward’s path.
Diogo Jota’s superb individual effort gave Liverpool late hope and 20-year-old Jarell Quansah thought he had rescued a point for the Reds in stoppage time.
However, the defender’s late goal was controversially disallowed by VAR for an earlier handball by Alexis Mac Allister in the build up, despite initially being awarded.
Despite defeat, Liverpool remain top of the group, two points clear of Toulouse. The Reds will qualify for the knockout rounds with a win against LASK on November 30.
Klopp’s side return to action against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.
