Cole Palmer said Chelsea were ‘unlucky not to get the win’ after a thrilling 4-4 draw with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer slammed home a stoppage time spot-kick to rescue Chelsea a point against his former side, in a dramatic conclusion to an astonishing Premier League contest in west London.
Chelsea had been at the centre of a classic game during Monday’s win at Spurs and were again involved in an enthralling encounter this weekend. Erling Haaland’s penalty put Man City ahead in a game that saw the momentum swing, before Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling turned the game around for Chelsea.
Manuel Akanji equalised for Pep Guardiola’s side before the break, and City retook the lead for a second time when Haaland slid in his second of the game moments after the restart. Nicolas Jackson brought Chelsea level once more, but Rodri’s deflected effort looked to have earned the Citizens a late win.
There was still time for more drama however, after Ruben Dias brought down Armando Broja inside the box in stoppage time. Palmer confidently dispatched the penalty, against the side he left last summer, and the 21-year-old believes Chelsea were unlucky not to claim all three points.
“Very strange the first time I have played against City – I have the upmost respect for the club I spent 15 years at and it is nice to see some friends,” Palmer told Sky Sports.
“Unlucky to not get the win. I have many City fans I know but it is the game.”
On his penalty, he added: “Long time waiting but I felt confident and I have had a few now. Kept calm and focused. Not going to say I work on them, cause I don’t. I trust on my natural ability.”
