Europe’s elite ‘keeping a close eye on’ Victor Boniface

Europe’s top clubs are keeping a close eye on Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface after the forward won his third Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award of the season.

Boniface has had an instant impact at the BayArena and is on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 22-year-old has scored seven goals and assisted five more in this year’s Bundesliga, after signing from Union Saint-Gilloisse in Belgium for just over £17m last summer.

The Nigerian striker has now won the Rookie of the Month award for the third time on the bounce, with his goals having helped Xabi Alonso’s men take a two-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

The prestigious award is voted for by teams, fans and experts with players only eligible if they were under 23 before matchday one and had not started a Bundesliga match in any previous season.

Leverkusen have taken the Bundesliga by storm this campaign and have failed to win just one of their 17 matches across all competitions, a 2-2 draw away to champions Bayern Munich.

Boniface’s form has helped propel Leverkusen into a lead in Germany’s title race, with the Nigerian continuing the form that saw him end last season as the Europa League’s leading scorer for Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Nigerian leads the Bundesliga for shots (57) and shots per 90 minutes (5.41), while only Leroy Sane (47) has managed more successful take-ons than Boniface (35), which has helped add another string to the bow of the Leverkusen attack.

The striker found the net 17 times last campaign and signed a five-year deal back in the summer, leaving Leverkusen in a strong position if interested clubs make a formal approach.

In terms of potential suiters, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea are each rumoured to be on the lookout for a striker in the January transfer window.
