Jurgen Klopp has hailed Mohamed Salah as ‘special’ and has discussed the Liverpool forward’s encouraging understanding with Darwin Nunez.
Salah has been in fine form this season to score 12 goals in 16 games in all competitions and netted four times for Egypt in a fixture against Djibouti during the international break.
The 31-year-old needs just one more goal to reach 150 in the Premier League, a milestone that would see the winger enter the all-time top 10 goalscorers in the division.
Salah is also just two goals from reaching 200 in a Liverpool shirt, but Klopp believes the Reds’ talisman is capable of even more.
“Of course he can improve, but that’s all about consistency,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Man City.
“We ask for it from him and he expects it from us. Of course he can [improve] but it’s not really about that, it’s about how he gained that experience over the years, that he knows more about the game. Now the experience and dealing with situations, he’s a completely different player.
“It’s really good that his team-mates look up to him and he’s really supportive of them, and having still this desire to score, it makes him who he is and that makes him special. Long may it continue.”
Salah has developed an encouraging understanding with Darwin Nunez in recent games, with no partnership in the Premier League having created more chances for one another this season. Nunez has provided seven Premier League assists since signing for Liverpool last season, with each having come for Salah.
On their understanding, Klopp said: “You can’t become a Liverpool player if you are not really football smart, that’s why with Darwin and Mo its clicking, they have a different way of play. Generally from the beginning, Mo supports the boys. Darwin came here with big expectations and Mo understood the most and wanted to help him. That for sure was the start of a special partnership.”
