Former England manager Terry Venable has passed away, aged 80.
Venables led England to the semi-final of the 1996 European Championship on home soil, where the Three Lions lost to Germany on penalties.
At club level, he had spells in charge of Crystal Palace (twice), Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona, Tottenham, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, while he also took charge of the Australian national team.
After a playing career that took in stints at QPR, Chelsea, Spurs and Crystal Palace, and saw him earn two England caps, Venables led Palace from the third tier to the top division in his first managerial role.
He later won a La Liga title at Barcelona in 1984/85 and led Tottenham to FA Cup success in 1991. His family have released a statement confirming his passing after a long illness.
“We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” the statement read, as per the BBC.
“We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”
