Ten Hag ‘confident’ ahead of crucial Champions League clash

Erik ten Hag has said Manchester United are ‘confident’ ahead of the club’s crucial Champions League clash with Galatasaray.

Ten Hag’s team travel to Turkey to take on Galatasaray on Wednesday evening, in a must-win clash for the club’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

United are bottom of Group A, having lost three of their four fixtures in this season’s Champions League, including a costly collapse at FC Copenhagen last time out.

Defeat in Istanbul would eliminate the Red Devils from the competition, while a draw would leave United needing to beat group winners Bayern Munich in their final fixture at Old Trafford, and in need of favours elsewhere.

United have failed to win on their three previous visits to Galatasaray, who have a strong home record against English opposition, but enter the contest in fine form after a run of five wins from six Premier League games.

Alejandro Garnacho scored a spectacular overhead kick goal to set the side on their way to a 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday, a result which leaves United sixth in the Premier League table, four points from the top four.

Ten Hag is confident that his team can take that form into an important European showdown this week.

“You can always fight,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference.

“Last year, we couldn’t win away from home. It was an issue. This year we can’t win at home. We are confident. We know how to deal with it and we will be confident on the pitch.

“You have to stay calm in your head and don’t get too emotional. Don’t give them anything, or the referee as well.

“You have to stay away from such moments. We know how to deal with it. We will make a good plan but at the end of the day the players decide. They have to play the game.”
