‘I don’t want to make a mistake’ – Pochettino coy on past Man United links

Mauricio Pochettino was coy when asked about past links to the Manchester United manager’s role, ahead of facing the Red Devils with Chelsea this week.

Chelsea travel to face Manchester United in the Premier League on Wednesday evening, as Pochettino prepares to take on a side who he was previously linked with managing. The Argentine was considered for the position following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

Pochettino was asked whether he was ‘glad’ to have been overlooked for the Manchester United role, having taken charge of Chelsea last summer.

“Again, I’m not going to talk about… you laugh but I you try to make me talk too much, I don’t want to make a mistake,” Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference.

“I am not the person to talk what is going on at different clubs. I am happy here in this project. We are dealing with many situations we need to improve also. Maybe if someone sees the project from outside maybe they think we need advice from the outside.

“We are building something here and 200% focused on evolving and developing the project we want together. That is my focus to try and deliver the job.”

Manchester United have lost six of their opening 14 games of the Premier League season and come into the clash after a disappointing defeat at Newcastle.

Asked whether it was a good time to face the Red Devils, Pochettino said: “I think we are all in similar level with different situations, I don’t say it is a good moment to go there.

“We are facing a team that is going to be tough because they want to win and we want to keep our momentum and build from Brighton and be high in the table. It’s important for us to be in a different position.”
