Chris Wilder says Sheffield United will have a ‘right good go’ against Liverpool this week after returning to the club as manager.
Wilder has replaced Paul Heckingbottom in charge of the struggling Blades after the Sheffield United boss became the first managerial casualty of the Premier League season.
Sheffield United lost 5-0 at relegation rivals Burnley last weekend and have turned to Wilder to salvage the club’s season, with the 56-year-old returning to Bramall Lane after a successful first spell at the club between 2016 and 2021.
Ahead of facing Liverpool on Wednesday evening, Wilder said his team have ‘nothing to lose’.
“It’s a bit surreal but I’ve been getting back to work this morning and being at a place I love, a special place for me. [I’ve been] seeing old faces, seeing new faces as well, and I’m delighted to get back into the game,” Wilder said at his pre-match press conference.
“It’s not a great situation, everybody knows that. It is the best league in the world and we are playing Liverpool first game up, so thanks very much for the fixture list!
“But 30-odd thousand [fans] under the lights at Bramall Lane on a Wednesday night against arguably one of the best teams in Europe – it’s a tough start but hopefully one we can go and attack, and have a right good go.
“That’s going to be the attitude from me and the players – to hopefully reignite the supporters because there has been a little bit of a disconnect, especially over the last two games.
“A lot of good things have happened at this club over the last two years – getting back into the Premier League – and we’re here for a reason. We’ve got to enjoy that challenge and that’s my message to the players. They’ve got to set the ball rolling to connect with the supporters because we know Bramall Lane, under the lights, is a fabulous place to play football. We’ve got nothing to lose.”
