Pochettino highlights Chelsea ‘problem’ after disappointing Man Utd defeat

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says that his side were unable to match the “energy” of Manchester United as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Scott McTominay put the Red Devils ahead in the 19th minute, but the home side failed to build on their lead before Cole Palmer equalised on the stroke of halftime.

The Scottish midfielder scored his second of the night and ultimately the winner midway through the second half to secure a deserved victory over Chelsea.

“We didn’t start the match well and maybe that can be expected because of the last couple of days,” Pochettino told BBC Match of the Day.

“We couldn’t match the energy of Manchester United but they had an extra day to recover. We missed energy and the possibility to change the game. That was a problem and it happens sometimes.

“That is football. Full credit to Manchester United. They deserved the victory and were better than us but we were close. We need to be focussing on the next game.”

Chelsea took 16 shots during the game, but only three of them were on target, something Pochettino wants to see his team improve upon.

We need to be more clinical in the places like Old Trafford. We conceded the second goal and it was more difficult. We need to make better decisions.

“I think they pushed us to play in our half in the first half but then I think we were better and played a little bit better. It’s hard with all of the emotion out there.”
