Everton boss Sean Dyche believes VAR is going out of its way to call fouls after his side were denied a goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had cut Spurs‘ lead in half after Richarlison and Son Heung-min put them ahead in the first half, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR check.
Stuart Attwell went to the monitor and determined that Andre Gomes fouled Emerson Royal in the build-up to the goal.
Gomes, who was making his first appearance for the Toffees since May 2022, did score in the 82nd minute, but could not find an equaliser before the full-time whistle.
“The referee’s decision was what was missing today,” Dyche told Premier League Productions. “We were outstanding after their second goal. We did everything we could to win the game, but today a massive decision goes against us.
“The referee has a great view, linesman has a great view, then VAR referees the game. For me, the game is in a terrible state for fouls and the VAR is finding a way to give fouls. I’m not in there to have a go at refs, but you can’t take away referee’s instinct.”
The result leaves Everton four points above the dropzone, while Tottenham jumped up to fourth in the Premier League table.
