Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden says he is keen to feature in a more central role after starring during the club’s 3-1 win at Everton.
Foden was named man of the match after a superb performance in City’s comeback win at Goodison Park, with the 23-year-old excellent in a position through the middle.
The England international cancelled out Jack Harrison’s opener for Everton with a stunning strike, as his fierce effort flew inside Jordan Pickford’s near post to bring the teams level. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva wrapped up the win for the Citizens.
Foden’s goal was the highlight of a standout showing from the midfielder, who praised the overall performance of the Premier League champions and outlined his desire for more minutes centrally.
“I thought we played well in the first half, it seemed to be the same story as the previous games. The manager told us to keep believing. We haven’t got this gold badge for no reason,” Foden said, as per the club’s official website.
“We have to believe in ourselves because we’re a top team. In the second half, wow, I think we blew them away with how we played.
“We have to praise Everton too as they did well, they’re a good side and made it difficult. Really happy with the result at a difficult place to come.
“Maybe I caught him [Jordan Pickford] by surprise because I hit it so quickly, I’ll have to see it back it happened so quickly. I was just delighted to see it hit the back of the net.
“We needed that goal for momentum, then we blew them away and played tremendous football so I’m really happy.
“You know how much I like playing in the middle. Thanks to the manager he keeps playing me in there at the moment and long may it continue because I enjoy it every time I play in there.”
“We forget sometimes how young Phil is,” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Foden.
“The talent is there: winger, striker, drop in, he can play in attacking midfielder and without options from Erling we need a sense of goal.
“Otherwise, we don’t have many players with a real sense of goal that’s why how he’s playing is so important. We’re pleased.
“Don’t forget he’s young and has lots to improve to be top class for many years.”
