Arteta suggests Arsenal will be active in January window

Mikel Arteta has suggested that Arsenal will be active in the transfer market this month and said the Gunners are ‘open’ to new additions.

Arsenal have been linked with making signings this month as the North Londoners look to strengthen their squad. The Gunners – who are fourth in the Premier League table and into the last 16 of the Champions League – have been rumoured to be interested in signing a striker in January.

Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic and Brentford’s Ivan Toney are said to be of interest to Arsenal, who are also short of defensive depth due to absences.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Liverpool in the FA Cup third round, Arteta said Arsenal would be ‘open’ to new arrivals in the January window.

“We are open for the transfer markets but the emphasis is on making the most of the players we have. We will work with the club to explore if there is any opportunities and then assess our options.”

One area that Arsenal are short at is left-back, with Jurrien Timber out injured and Takehiro Tomiyasu having departed to compete at the Asian Cup with Japan. Arteta revealed that first-choice full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko will be assessed ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

“He is progressing well. He will have another training session tomorrow and we will evaluate whether he is able to play and start the game. On the rest, there is no news.”
