Foden determined to be ‘decisive’ player for Man City

Phil Foden said he is determined to be a ‘decisive’ player for Manchester City as the midfielder continued his fine form with a brace against Huddersfield.

Foden scored twice as the Citizens thrashed Huddersfield 5-0 to progress to the fourth round, with the 23-year-old opening the scoring with a smart finish, before placing in a second from the edge of the area.

Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku were also on target for Pep Guardiola’s side, alongside an own goal from Ben Jackson, as the holder’s defence of the trophy began in routine fashion. Foden praised the performance from City, calling the win a ‘great result’.

“We’re all buzzing with result. It was a bit difficult to break them down. The first goal I scored was important, then we had more rhythm and we took our chances well,” Foden told the BBC.

“Delighted with he result, not an easy side when they give everything to beat us but I thought the way we handled ourselves, didn’t get impatient, carried on playing our football – we’re delighted with the result.

“The team handles it well. We seem to come against a low block quite often. We know what to expect, we just need to be patient, find the spaces and keep switching and hopefully they’ll open up and get tired. We attacked at the right time and aggressively so it’s a great result.

Foden’s brace continued an excellent run of performances from the England international in a central role, and the midfielder said he is keen to continue improving and be ‘decisive’ in the final third.

“I’m enjoying my football at the moment, being in the pockets and in between the lines. It’s where I want to be, I need to keep helping the team with goals and assists and be that decisive player. I’m trying to do that every game.”
