Real Madrid have informed Kylian Mbappe that he must make a decision on whether to join the club by mid-January.
Mbappe is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season and Real Madrid have made an approach to sign the forward on a free transfer, following a long-standing interest in the France captain.
The 25-year-old appeared set to sign for the Spanish side in 2022, before doing a U-turn on his future at PSG and signing a new deal. Real Madrid are determined to avoid a repeat of that situation and have demanded that Mbappe makes a decision on his future this month.
The Athletic are reporting that Mbappe has been informed on the conditions of a deal, with the contract on offer less than he would have received had he signed for Los Blancos 18 months ago.
The terms of the contract offer have not been revealed, but are understood to be less than the €130million signing bonus and salary of €26m per year offered in 2022. However, the deal would make Mbappe comfortably the highest-paid player in the squad.
Mbappe has scored a club-record 237 goals in 284 games for Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are long-term suitors of the striker, who is viewed as arguably the finest player in world football right now.
Real Madrid failed to sign a permanent replacement for Karim Benzema following the forward’s exit last summer, agreeing a deal to bring the 33-year-old Joselu in on loan from Espanyol, with the club’s sights set on signing Mbappe in 2024.
Mbappe last week discussed his future and said he is yet to make a decision on where he will play his football next season.
“First of all, I’m very, very, very motivated for this year. It’s very important,” Mbappe said after scoring in PSG’s 2-0 win over Toulouse, as per the BBC.
“As I said, we’ve got titles to go after and we’ve already won one, so that’s already done. After that, no, I haven’t made up my mind yet.
“But in any case, with the agreement I made with the chairman [Nasser Al-Khelaifi] this summer, it doesn’t matter what I decide.
“We managed to protect all parties and preserve the club’s serenity for the challenges ahead, which remains the most important thing. So we’ll say it’s secondary.”
