Chelsea youngster Ian Maatsen has reportedly agreed a contract extension ahead of his proposed loan move to Borussia Dortmund.
The Dutch full-back, whose contract was due to expire in 2025, will commit to the Blues until 2027, but the deal includes a release clause that kicks in this coming summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Maatsen will travel to Germany to finalise the deal, with Dortmund expected to pay a loan fee of around £2 million. The player’s medical is said to be booked for Wednesday.
The 21-year-old came close to leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer, but turned down the opportunity to reunite with Vincent Kompany at Burnley to fight for his place in the squad.
Mauricio Pochettino has only given Maatsen less than 400 minutes of action in all competitions since then, as the Argentine has preferred to start Levi Colwill at left-back in place of the injured Ben Chilwell.
There is reportedly no option or obligation included in the deal to send Maatsen to Dortmund, indicating Chelsea wish to assess the 2022/23 Championship Player of the Year’s future when he returns in the summer.
The club are ‘considering’ a left-back signing if Maatsen leaves on a permanent transfer in the summer, according to the Standard.
