Chelsea and Liverpool keen on Magpies midfielder

Chelsea and Liverpool are considering bids for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes amid the Magpies’ need to balance the books.

Newcastle are understood to be considering the sale of a big-name asset as the club look to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

More than £400m has been spent on players since the Saudi-backed takeover at St James’ Park, and the Magpies posted losses of £73m for the 2022/23 campaign, with Newcastle’s revenues remaining a distance behind the Premier League’s top teams.

Guimaraes is viewed as one of the club’s most saleable stars and Spanish outlet Fichajes are reporting that Chelsea and Liverpool could activate the Brazilian’s release clause.

The 26-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders since joining Newcastle from Lyon for fee of up to £40m. This season, Guimaraes ranks sixth for progressive passes, seventh for successful take-ons and second for fouls drawn.

According to widespread reports, Guimaraes has a release clause of around €115m (£98.9m) in his contract at Newcastle, with his sale one that would bring in huge profit.

Barcelona have been credited with interest, but look unlikely to be able to meet the financial demands of a deal, while Paris Saint-Germain are also admirers.
