AS Roma have already lined up a replacement for Jose Mourinho after sacking their manager on Tuesday morning.
The Portuguese was let go by the club after losing 3-1 to AC Milan on Sunday night, their third defeat in their last five Serie A matches. They had also been eliminated from the Coppa Italia by hated rivals Lazio in midweek.
The Italian have moved quickly to replace Mourinho in the dugout, with football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that club legend Daniele De Rossi is ‘the chosen one’ for the vacant role.
Talks over a deal between the club and the 40-year-old are already underway, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
De Rossi, whose only managerial experience was a short stint at SPAL, is said to be ‘keen’ on taking the job.
The former midfielder came through the club’s academy and won the Coppa Italia twice during his 18 years as a senior player with the Giallorossi, before leaving in 2019 to join Boca Juniors, where he won a league title in his final season as a professional footballer.
Despite winning the Uefa Europa Conference League in 2022 and guiding Roma to last year’s Europa League final, Mourinho has been under pressure this season with his side ninth in the table.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs manager could return to the touchline in the near future, having been linked with jobs in the Saudi Pro League.
The 60-year-old, who previously turned down an approach from Al-Hilal, stated last October:”I will go to Saudi Arabia in some free time, but I am convinced that I will work there. I don’t know when, but I am pretty sure of it.
“No one knows the future, but I will definitely do this.”
