Sean Dyche has no regrets over taking Everton job despite Premier League sanctions

Sean Dyche still relishes the challenge of managing Everton despite the prospect of yet more charges being levelled at the club by the Premier League.

The Toffees were docked ten points earlier this season for breaching the league’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for the assessment period ending in 2021/22, a sanction they are currently appealing.

On Monday the Premier League confirmed that Everton have been charged for breaching PSR in the period up to and including 2022/23. Nottingham Forest have also been charged for the same period.

Dyche pointed out that the club have made concerted efforts to be more compliant with PSR since he became manager last January.

“I think we are in the bottom three or four net spends in the last three or four seasons, so there is a start point of the club motioning to doing things correctly,” he said ahead of Wednesday night’s FA Cup replay against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.

“Since I have been here we have let players go out of contract. We have been working hard. We sold three young players in the timelines we were given to make sure the money was in. The new stadium speaks to itself, the effect that will have on the city.

“Alongside that trying to put out a team that can be competitive. You sort of end up with an on pitch sanction, there are mistakes we have made but that’s a natural part of football, it’s not an exact science. We get the initial spell, you lose 10 points and it’s an on pitch sanction but we are being [powerful on the] pitch by cutting our resources.”

Asked if in hindsight he would still take the Everton job, Dyche did not give off the impression he regretted his decision in his answer.

“I don’t mind getting my teeth into something,” he said. “It’s a great history, a great club. These chances don’t always come along. When you are out of a job, as a manager you are rarely going to get the perfect job come along.

“You are probably going to get one with its challenges. There are probably more so here than others I was offered in my nine months out of the game but I am never going to knock that.”
