Liverpool retain interest in Chelsea defender Colwill

Liverpool retain an interest in signing Levi Colwill from Chelsea, despite the defender signing a new long-term deal earlier this season.

Liverpool and Brighton expressed interest in signing Colwill last summer after the centre-back returned to Chelsea from a promising loan spell with the latter.

Colwill made 22 appearances for the Seagulls last season before shining as England won the u-21 European Championship in the summer without conceding a goal.

The 20-year-old has since been introduced into Mauricio Pochettino’s team at Chelsea and has featured in all but one of the club’s Premier League games this season.

The Blues have no interest in selling Colwill, who captained the West Londoners against Manchester United last month, and agreed a new six-year deal with the defender in August.

However, 90min are reporting that Liverpool are continuing to monitor his situation as the Reds look to sign a left-sided centre-back in the coming transfer windows.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with a number of central defenders in recent weeks, including Sporting Libon’s Goncalo Inacio, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ko Itakura.

Liverpool are short of defensive depth at present, with left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas out injured. Joel Matip is also expected to miss the rest of the campaign with an ACL injury and could have played his last game for Liverpool, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
