Chris Wilder and David Moyes have given their reaction to a chaotic conclusion as Sheffield United drew 2-2 with West Ham at Bramall Lane.
A low-quality first half saw West Ham take the lead through Maxwel Cornet’s strike, before January signing Ben Brereton Diaz brought Sheffield United level on the brink of half-time.
West Ham looked to have won it through James Ward-Prowse’s penalty, but an astonishing final few minutes of stoppage time saw both teams receive a red card and Sheffield United strike late to earn a point.
Rhian Brewster was first sent off for a wild lunge, before West Ham’s Vladimir Coufal earned a second booking to make it ten men each. The late drama continued as the Blades were awarded a penalty, with Oli McBurnie converting in the 103rd minute for the latest ever Premier League goal.
“That is the least we deserved, I thought we were really good. My side has character, resilience and a bit of bottle,” Blades boss Chris Wilder said to TNT Sports.
“We have to bridge the gap and we have some good players. We had to go more direct at points but we were more than that today.
“I felt we had control of the game and for Ben to get a goal, he will be an asset for us. It has been a decent day for us.
“David Moyes will say he has had decisions go against him but I don’t think that should have been a red card for Brewster. Their keeper makes an unbelievably rash decision to come out and we get rewards.”
West Ham counterpart Moyes was disappointed with his side’s decision-making and called it ‘probably our worst performance of the season’.
“We should never have got ourselves red carded, we got caught on the ball in midfield,” Moyes said.
“Really, we had the chances to win, we had great chances to make it 3-0.
“We went down to 10 v 10 in the last minute but even so that wasn’t a problem, we should have defended it.
“We defend as well as we could have done and a couple of decisions didn’t go our way.
“It was not good, probably our worst performance of the season as far as quality on the ball and quality of decisions.
“I wouldn’t like to blame the pitch but the pitch was quite hard, but I’d only be making excuses if I’d done that. That may be a reason for some of the poor passing in the first half.
“We’re disappointed, we feel as if things have gone against us. We’ll only blame ourselves but ultimately we could look at other people as well.”
