Joelinton eyeing Newcastle exit amid contract stand-off

Newcastle run the risk of losing Joelinton in the summer with the midfielder set to turn down the offer of a new contract.

The Brazilian’s current deal expires in 2025 and he has shown a reluctance to extend with the Magpies, leaving Newcastle with a decision to make on his future as he enters the final 12 months of his deal in the summer.

The 27-year-old has evolved into a key figure for Newcastle under Eddie Howe, transitioning from underperforming centre-forward to an effective box-to-box midfield presence across the last two seasons.

Joelinton’s performances have seen him break into the Brazil national set-up and he has earned five caps since his debut in 2023. Sky Germany are reporting that the ‘clear tendency’ from the former Hoffenheim player at this stage is to turn down an extension at Newcastle.

His situation will alert a number of top clubs across Europe, while Newcastle could cash in on Joelinton as the club look to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

The Magpies posted losses of £73m for the 2022/23 campaign and have been linked with selling a leading name to ease their concerns.

Joelinton could have played his last game for Newcastle after travelling to Barcelona to undergo surgery on a groin problem this week. He is expected to be sidelined until the end of April at the earliest.
