Bayern Munich make ‘breakthrough’ in Newcastle transfer talks

Bayern Munich are ‘very optimistic’ about signing Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The German emerged as suitors for the England right-back this month as they seek to strengthen their squad for the second half of the campaign for manager Thomas Tuchel.

Reports this week suggested that the Magpies were not interested in selling one of their key players, even if Trippier has exhibited some poor form in recent weeks.

However, BILD report that Bayern have made a ‘breakthrough in negotiations’ as they work on bringing the defender to Bavaria.

The Bundesliga champions reportedly want to get a deal done swiftly so they can take him on loan for the rest of the season. However, Sky Germany claim Newcastle would prefer a £12 million fee in a permanent transfer.

Sky Sports News claim that Trippier himself is ‘open’ to the move, although it seems likely he may have to take a paycut if the deal is to go ahead. Bayern are not willing to do anything ‘economically unreasonable’ to sign the player.

The 33-year-old, who signed for Newcastle from Atletico Madrid for £12m plus add-ons in January 2022, has been a key member of Eddie Howe’s side, making 63 Premier League appearances for the club.

Trippier leads the top flight for crosses attempted (162), while he is second for chances created (54) and third for assists (7).
