Xabi Alonso has reacted to speculation linking him with becoming Liverpool’s next manager, following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
Alonso has been installed as the early favourite to replace Klopp, following a brilliant start to his coaching career. The Spaniard – who made 210 appearances for Liverpool during a five-season spell on Merseyside as a player – has led Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table this season.
The Germans are four points ahead of Bayern Munich and unbeaten in all competitions, with Leverkusen targeting a first-ever Bundesliga crown.
Alonso’s impact has led to speculation he could be Liverpool-bound to replace the departing Klopp, who will leave after almost nine years with the Reds.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s fixture with Borussia Monchengladbach tomorrow, Alonso said he is focused only on his current club.
“I have huge respect for Jurgen, huge admiration before coming to Liverpool and during his years there it has become even bigger for what he has achieved and how he achieved it.
“At the moment I am really happy here, enjoying my work here. Each day and each game is a challenge. We are enjoying an intense but beautiful journey.
“I am not in a moment to think about the next thing. I’m just thinking about what is now. I’m in a great place and I’m enjoying it.”
