Arteta insists he has ‘trust’ in Arsenal forward line

Mikel Arteta insists he has trust in his Arsenal forward line to score goals after failing to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

Arsenal were rumoured to be interested in bringing in a centre-forward in the winter window, with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah having scored just nine times between them in the Premier League this season.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney was among the names reported to be of interest to the Gunners, though Arteta insists he is happy with the options at his disposal. Arsenal host league leaders Liverpool in a crucial Premier League fixture this weekend.

“I will wait until Sunday and if we score a lot of goals? I think like this, I love my players and on Sunday we are going to score goals and be top,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference.

“The players fully deserve our credit. Do I trust in the players? Absolutely.”

Discussing team news for the clash with Liverpool, Arteta revealed that midfielder Thomas Partey has suffered a setback in his return from thigh issue.

“With Thomas unfortunately we had a little set back a few days ago. He’s not going to be available in the squad for Liverpool. We don’t know if it’s a few days or weeks. He felt something in a very similar area and he wasn’t able to train the last few days.

“It is a big concern because he was such an important player for us. He was getting some momentum at the start of the season and then we lost him for a while. Now we have been a long time without him. He gives you something very different and the only one who can give you this in the squad. He’s been a real miss.”
