Ange Postecoglou has urged referees not to depend on the VAR to make decisions for them after Tottenham Hotspur drew with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Spurs took an early lead when Richarlison scored his tenth goal of the Premier League campaign, but the Toffees equalised when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header went in off Jack Harrison.
Richarlison put the visitors ahead a second time with an exquisite finish from outside the area just before halftime.
Postecoglou’s men couldn’t hold on for the win however, as Jarrad Branthwaite headed the ball past Guglielmo Vicario at the far post deep into injury time.
“It’s obviously never going to be an easy game here,” he told BBC Sport. “You have to deal with a fair bit but most of the time we handled it okay.
“In the second half we had good chances and we needed the third goal to kill the game off. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold out.”
Harrison could be seen backing into Vicario before Everton’s first goal as the Italian could only palm the cross into the path of James Tarkowski, but the incident was not judged to be a foul by referee Michael Oliver.
“It seems like referees just let things go nowadays and let VAR decide. We’re disappointed to concede so late,” Postecoglou added.
“It seems like there’s a trend with us that referees aren’t prepared to intervene in those kind of situations, we have to accept that.
“The nature of it, conceding so late, doesn’t give us the chance to wrestle it back. We just have to accept that.”
Everton remain in the relegation zone despite the point ahead of their meeting with Manchester City next Saturday.
