Dortmund admit permanent Sancho clause ‘not realistic’

Borussia Dortmund have said that an option to sign Jadon Sancho permanently was ‘not realistic’ during talks with Manchester United in January.

Sancho returned to the Bundesliga side on loan from Manchester United last month following a fallout with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old had underwhelmed since moving to the Premier League from Dortmund in a £72.9m deal in 2021, and will hope to reignite his career upon returning to the Bundesliga.

He has impressed in his first appearances since re-signing for Dortmund and has two assists in three appearances across all competitions.

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has said the Germans are keen to sign Sancho on a permanent basis, but conceded that permanent options were not possible for the winger or on-loan Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen in January, due to the fees demanded by the Premier League sides.

“Buy option clause for Jadon Sancho or Maatsen was not realistic,” Kehl said, as per Fabrizio Romano.

“We naturally advocated for an option with Sancho and Maatsen but the negotiating position was not such that we could implement it… and so we will accept it for now.”
