Chelsea had a transfer enquiry for Darwin Nunez rejected by Liverpool during the summer window.
Nunez had a mixed first season for Liverpool after signing from Benfica in a deal worth an initial £64m, scoring a respectable 15 goals in all competitions but receiving criticism for wastefulness around goal.
Chelsea director Paul Winstanley is understood to be an admirer of the Uruguayan forward and The Times are reporting that the west Londoners approached Liverpool to gauge their interest in selling the 24-year-old last summer.
The approach from the Blues is understood to have been rapidly turned down with Liverpool informing their Premier League rivals that Nunez was not for sale.
Chelsea instead agreed a deal to sign Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal for a fee of £32m, alongside the £52m capture of France international Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig.
Nunez has since impressed during the current campaign and has 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, cementing his place as a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s first XI.
He has scored nine times in the Premier League, matching his haul from 2022/23, as part of a Liverpool forward line that has thrived during the current campaign, with the Reds boasting five players to have reached 10+ goals in all competitions.
The Reds are currently top of the Premier League table, four points ahead of Manchester City having played a game more.
