Bukayo Saka refused to be drawn into the debate over whether or not he is a world-class player after Rio Ferdinand said the Arsenal star is not yet at that level.
The winger continued his excellent form for the Gunners on Saturday night, scoring the third goal of a 4-1 home win over Newcastle United.
Saka now has 17 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season, but Ferdinand excluded him from a list of 12 players who he considers to be world class.
The former Manchester United defender believes the 22-year-old will. be in that category before long, though. “Saka’s got that world-class potential, he just hasn’t been exposed to the knockout stages of the Champions League – the longevity is the difference,” he said.
“If you look at that list, you can see they’ve played in the top, most prestigious games and they’ve produced in those moments. And they’ve all done ridiculous things over a long period of time.”
Following the win over the Magpies, Saka was asked about being a world-class player by TNT Sports, but responded with a simple “no comment”.
He continued: “I am happy with another goal today and more importantly happy to win.
“I am working hard every day and giving my best. Obviously I have great teammates giving me good passes which helps as well.
“We have been working hard and there is a lot of quality going forward and it is starting to click now – we just need to continue with this [form].”
The victory puts Arsenal back within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool in the table.
