Chelsea transfer target has appealing €50m release clause

Chelsea have been tracking Nico Williams for ‘some time’ and the Athletic Bilbao winger has a release clause of €50m (£42.7m) that can be activated in the summer.

Williams has been named as a transfer target for several Premier League clubs heading into the summer transfer window with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Spurs and Liverpool all named as potential suitors.

The 21-year-old has scored three goals and provided six assists in La Liga this season, while he ranks second in Spain’s top division for successful take-ons and goal-creating actions.

Williams has earned 11 caps for the Spanish national side, scoring twice, and is expected to form part of La Roja squad for this summer’s European Championship.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Chelsea are keen on a deal for Williams with the west Londoners considering activating the release clause inserted into the three-year contract the winger signed in December.

Williams’ previous deal was due to expire in the summer, though the youngster agreed an extension to protect his value at the San Mamés. However, a release clause was included ahead of anticipated interest from top clubs at the end of the campaign.
