Maddison delighted as Spurs ‘blow away’ Aston Villa

James Maddison said he was delighted after Tottenham ‘blew away’ top-four rivals Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Ange Postecoglou’s side scored four second-half goals to earn a convincing 4-0 win at Aston Villa, a statement result in the battle to secure Champions League qualification.

Spurs began the afternoon five points behind Aston Villa in the table, having played a game less, and put their top-four hopes back in their own hands with a ruthless second-half performance.

Maddison opened the scoring from Pape Matar Sarr’s superb cross, before Brennan Johnson doubled the visitor’s lead just three minutes later.

Two goals in stoppage time, one from Son Heung-min and another from substitute Timo Werner, put the gloss on an emphatic result for Spurs.

Maddison was delighted with the win but said Spurs will continue to take their season game-by-game in their bid to secure Champions League football.

“It feels as big as any other three points but we knew there would be a lot on today’s game just because of the nature of the league table,” Maddison said to Sky Sports.

“[I’m] really happy, you see the celebrations because we work all week. We had a game plan and we came away with three points with a convincing win.

“It’s a common theme in our game, we score a lot of goals late on. The message was to keep doing the same thing because they won’t be able to keep up.

“We blew them away at the start of the second half.

“Game-by-game, sorry for the boring cliché answer. That’s all you can do. you have to focus on winning the game.”
