Kalvin Phillips set to be dropped from England squad

Kalvin Phillips is set to be dropped from the England squad for March’s friendly fixtures with Brazil and Belgium.

Phillips has been a regular in Gareth Southgate’s plans in recent years but has struggled for form and favour since signing for Manchester City from Leeds in 2022.

After making just two Premier League starts in 18 months at the Etihad, Phillips signed on loan for West Ham in January but has been unable to rediscover his form.

A series of poor performances for the Irons are set to lead to his omission from the England squad, which will be named at 2pm on Thursday, in what will be the final international break ahead of Euro 2024.

Phillips now faces a fight to regain favour ahead of this summer’s major tournament, despite England’s limited options in defensive midfield. West Ham teammate Jarrod Bowen is set to be included, according to The Athletic, though Manchester City winger Jack Grealish will miss out.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, Brentford forward Ivan Toney and Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland could also return to the squad after extended spells away from the international scene.
