Pochettino believes Gallagher can force route into England side

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Conor Gallagher is capable of forcing his way into the England team ahead of Euro 2024 this summer.

The midfielder has been included in the England squad for this month’s internationals against Brazil and Belgium, in what is the last opportunity to impress ahead of this summer’s tournament.

Central midfield is an area of uncertainty for England ahead of the European Championship, with who will join Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the engine room uncertain.

Pochettino insists Gallagher – who has four goals in his last seven appearances for Chelsea – is capable of filling that role and believes the 24-year-old’s ‘200 per cent’ commitment will impress England manager Gareth Southgate.

“I think he’s convincing the England manager because of his commitment, he’s already 200 per cent in everything,” Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Leicester in the FA Cup this weekend.

“He needs to keep performing and he needs this commitment always because it is one of his best skills – the capacity to help and fight. He needs to keep believing and trying to improve in this way. He’s scoring and feeling more confident. Now the challenge is to score more goals, and he feels comfortable to go in this direction.”
