Roy Keane and Gary Neville ‘can see’ Gareth Southgate being appointed as the next manager of former club Manchester United.
Southgate is expected to step down from his role as England manager after this summer’s European Championship and has been linked with taking charge at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s position is under threat following a disappointing campaign and the club’s new minority owners, INEOS, are considering change.
INEOS are keen to appoint Dan Ashworth as the club’s new Director of Football and Ashworth’s working relationship with Southgate from the national set-up has increased speculation that the England manager could be appointed at United.
Keane and Neville discussed the speculation on the Stick to Football Podcast and each believe Southgate is a viable option for the Red Devils.
“I could see that happening,” ex-Manchester United captain Keane said.
“Obviously everyone’s thinking he’s probably going to be with England this summer if he has a good (European) Championship, thinking if they could win it. And if they don’t, then maybe they’re thinking you’ve ran your race with him. His connection with Dan Ashworth, who he has worked with previously. Yeah, I’m not surprised with it.”
Neville agreed with Keane and said he has changed his stance on Southgate as a potential Manchester United manager.
“I never saw Gareth Southgate as a Manchester United manager, psychologically, I never saw that. I can see it now, now Dan Ashworth has come in. I just think, what does Erik ten Hag need to do to stay as Manchester United manager? So, for instance, is the FA Cup enough, or does he need to get top four, or top five, Champions League?”
