Liverpool manager Matt Beard says a “mad 10 minutes” cost them on Saturday afternoon as Man City continued their charge toward the Women’s Super League title.
Three goals in the space of eight minutes from Lauren Hemp, Jessica Park and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw stunned the Reds at Prenton Park.
Sahw grabbed her second of the day shortly after the break to take her tally for the season to 19 in 17 games. A late Khiara Keating own goal was a mere consolation for the hosts as they lost 4-1.
“I thought we started the game really well,” Beard told Sky Sports. “I thought we were the dominant team.
“We have had a mad 10 minutes after we conceded the first goal and then you have a mountain to climb against teams like Manchester City. It is frustrating but you can’t give the opportunities like we did against them.”
The result puts Man City three points clear at the top of the WSL table. Emma Hayes’ Chelsea have a game in hand, but Beard only sees the title race going one way.
“I think they will win it,” he predicted. “I think they deserve to win it and they have been the best team this year. I think Gareth has done a great job.”
Man City boss Gareth Taylor felt it was a significant win for his side as they chase down a first league title since 2016. “It’s big,” he said.
“I think I always look at the performance being the catalyst for what we do and win games. It is nice to be in this position and it’s three points only.
“We know what we have to do between now and the end of the season and we know what others can do. We have the international break now and then we will look forward to West Ham at home.”
