Sheffield United suffer double blow ahead of Liverpool clash

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder will be without two key players when they face Liverpool this week.

The Blades travel to Anfield on Thursday for a 7.30pm kickoff as they continue their unlikely bid to stave off relegation from the Premier League.

The two clubs find themselves at opposite ends of the table; Liverpool sit on top as they challenge for the title, while Sheffield United are rock bottom with just 15 points from 29 games.

The Yorkshire outfit have avoided defeat in their last two outings, but gave up late goals against both Bournemouth and Fulham to come away with just two points for their efforts.

Wilder’s men have not won a game since 10 February when they beat Luton Town 3-1 at Kenilworth Road, but their task in midweek has been made all the more difficult with the latest injury update.

It has been confirmed that right-back George Baldock will be out of action for six weeks after picking up an injury while on international duty with Greece.

Wilder is holding out hope the defender will return before the end of the season, although Tom Davies is also facing a fight to be fit before the campaign ends.

The former Everton midfielder is also set for six weeks on the sidelines, but striker Cameron Archer will be fit to face Liverpool in a boost for the manager.

Baldock’s contract expires in the summer, when Sheffield United will hold talks about a possible extension with the 31-year-old.

“We’ve got a lot of talking to do, and he’ll have options as well,” said Wilder. “He’s a player we’ve really enjoyed working with and hopefully we’ll have that opportunity again.”
