Everton have been handed a further two-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
The Toffees were deducted a record-breaking 10 points earlier in the campaign for a first breach of the rules, though the sanctions were reduced to six points on appeal. However, a verdict has now arrived for the club’s second breach from an independent commission that the Premier League referred Everton to in January.
Sean Dyche’s side have had another two points deducted, a decision which sees the Merseysiders drop a place to 16th in the table. Everton are now just two points above the Premier League’s relegation places as a result.
A decision on whether Everton will appeal this verdict has not been made public, though the Blues must inform of their intention with seven days.
Everton have posted losses in six successive seasons, including a figure of £89.1million for the 2022/2023 season. However, the Toffees have argued that much of their recent loss – and growing debt – is as a result of the club’s construction of a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which is scheduled to be opened in 2025.
The latest sanctions are for the three-year period ending 2022/23, with the first deduction for the previous three-year cycle. Premier League clubs are permitted to lose no more than £105m over a three-year rolling period.
