Amorim now an option for Manchester United

Ruben Amorim is now an option to become Manchester United manager with Erik ten Hag expected to leave at the end of the season.

Amorim has been linked with leaving Sporting Lisbon for the Premier League in recent weeks and the 39-year-old had been previously named as a candidate for soon-to-be vacant positions at Liverpool and West Ham.

The 39-year-old, who has won two Primeira Liga titles at Sporting including this season’s championship, flew to London for talks with West Ham last month, after Liverpool turned their attention to Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Those negotiations failed to find a breakthrough and Amorim has since said he will be staying at Sporting, though interest from Manchester United could change that situation.

According to iNews, Amorim is on a three-man shortlist to replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford, alongside outgoing Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel and former Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

The Portuguese coach has won plaudits for his work at Sporting, where his high-intensity brand of football ended the club’s 19-year wait for a league title in 2020/21. He has led the capital club to a second title success this season, enhancing his reputation as several top clubs consider coaching changes.

Ten Hag’s position at Manchester United is under threat after a poor second season in charge of the Red Devils and Monday night’s 4-0 loss at Crystal Palace was the latest setback in a campaign of disappointments.

United’s 13 league losses is a club record for a Premier League campaign and even FA Cup success, ahead of a final clash with Manchester City this month, is unlikely to salvage Ten Hag’s position.

The Dutchman has been linked with Bayern Munich and former club Ajax if, as expected, he leaves Manchester United.
