Pochettino says Europe ‘important’ for improving Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino has said securing European football is important for Chelsea as his team look to end their season on a high.

Chelsea have climbed into seventh place after successive wins over Tottenham and West Ham, results which have extended their recent run to one defeat in 12 Premier League games.

The West Londoners are level on points with Manchester United and two behind Newcastle in a tight race for the top six, and Pochettino said his team are determined to secure continental football.

“It is important for every single club. It’s true it’s going to be hard,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“To get us the most [points] I think is to recreate the performance and replicate the way we play and being focused.

“Of course, we know very well we need to win games in the last three games. We then have a possibility to move into a place to play in Europe.

“The team is ready to face the last three games and it is important for us to be in Europe – of course we are focusing on the next game.”

Chelsea have been handed a boost with Reece James back in full training and Pochettino is delighted to have the club captain back available.

“The most important thing is Reece James is going to be there for us.

“Then because we have an amazing relationship and of course he is an amazing player.

“It is not easy when you comeback from a long-term injury. The most important thing is he can be available and be part of the squad.

“It is important to finish [the season] with good feelings.”
