Man United receive fresh interest in striker transfer

Man United will be very busy in the summer transfer window as they intend on refreshing their squad ahead of next season.

Another disappointing campaign means several of their first-team players are expected to leave Old Trafford – including striker Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old has spent this season on loan with La Liga side Getafe, where he has registered ten goals and six assists in 34 appearances since Man United announced he would not recommence his career at Old Trafford.

Greenwood has not played for the Red Devils since being arrested in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The charges were subsequently dropped when key witnesses withdrew and there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

The centre-forward has been linked with Barcelona, although those rumours were debunked by Fabrizio Romano, while Getafe are said to be keen on another loan deal.

While Man United would prefer to get a permanent transfer completed, another loan is not out of the question. But Greenwood will likely garner attention from clubs at a higher level and look to play his football elsewhere next year.

One club that has registered their interest is Napoli, who have made “contact” with Man United over a possible deal, according to The Athletic.

Greenwood’s contract expires in June 2025, although there is an option for a further year that Man United can choose to activate.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whose company INEOS have acquired a 25 percent stake in the club, has said that a decision on Greenwood’s future will be made at the end of the season.

“He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football,” Ratcliffe said. “So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.

“He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

“The process will be: understand the facts, not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”
