Jean-Philippe Mateta has said Gareth Southgate ‘has to’ call up Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze for Euro 2024 if England ‘want to win something’.
Mateta and Eze starred as Crystal Palace thrashed Aston Villa 5-0 to end their Premier League campaign on a high, with each having been influential during an impressive run of results under Oliver Glasner.
Eze scored twice and provided an assist for Mateta, who helped himself to a hat-trick at Selhurst Park.
The former – who made his England debut in May 2023 and has won two caps for the Three Lions – ended the Premier League campaign with 11 goals and four assists from 27 appearances.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mateta was in no doubt that Eze deserves a place on the plane for this summer’s European Championship.
“You have to call him,” the French forward said.
“You have to. If you want to win something!”
Eze was more relaxed when discussing potential involvement at Euro 2024, ahead of the announcement of Southgate’s squad on Tuesday.
“I’m just here, man, trying to enjoy it playing football. If I get called then so be it.”
