Premier League legend Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the head coach of Plymouth Argyle ahead of next season.
The former Manchester United and Everton striker has been out of work since being sacked by Birmingham City in January after winning just two of his 15 games in charge.
Rooney replaces Ian Foster, who was dismissed in April as Plymouth avoided relegation by a single point this past season.
The 38-year-old believes the move “feels like the perfect next step in my career” as he returns to football management.
“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project,” said Rooney. “I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.
“I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park. The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.”
Rooney has previously had spells in charge of Derby County and MLS outfit DC United, but has only won a shade over 26 percent of his games as a manager.
