Chelsea and Man United target set to sign new Ipswich deal

Kieran McKenna is set to end speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract at Ipswich Town.

McKenna has been named as a potential candidate for the vacant roles at Chelsea and Brighton, while Manchester United are understood to have held talks with the representatives of their former coach about the prospect of replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The 38-year-old has emerged as one of the brightest coaching talents in English football after leading Ipswich to back-to-back promotions, with the Tractor Boys set to play in the Premier League next season for the first time since 2001-02.

McKenna had inherited a team struggling in League One in December 2021 and his transformation at Portman Road has not gone unnoticed at the top end of the Premier League.

Chelsea had considered McKenna after the decision to part company with Mauricio Pochettino, though the West Londoners are advancing in negotiations with Leicester boss Enzo Maresca.

Brighton also like McKenna as the Seagulls search for a successor to Roberto De Zerbi, while Manchester United viewed the Ipswich boss – who spent five years on the coaching staff at Old Trafford, working alongside Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – as a potential contingency option should Ten Hag be sacked.

However, The Athletic have revealed that McKenna will snub interest in favour of signing a new deal at Ipswich. The news will be a massive boost to the newly-promoted side as they prepare to return to the top flight for the first time in over two decades.
