Southgate delivers update on Man Utd star as experimental lineup expected for Euro 2024 warm-up

Gareth Southgate has issued a fitness update on Manchester United defender Luke Shaw as he prepares his England squad for Euro 2024.

The left-back has not played for the Red Devils since coming off at halftime of their Premier League clash with Luton Town in February.

The 28-year-old was included in the Three Lions’ provisional squad despite only making 15 starts in all competitions last season due to numerous injury setbacks.

But Southgate says Shaw is recovering well and is optimistic about his chances of playing at the Euros in Germany this summer.

“Everything we’ve needed to see in running and recovery is on track, progressing well. Exact timelines are more difficult to predict,” he told BBC.

“Of course, every step has to go well to get there. We are pleased with the progress he’s making. It’s definitely a more optimistic picture than week or so ago.”

Southgate added there is still more work to be done before he can make the pitch in a game situation, which makes it all the more surprising he is the only specialist left-back in the squad.

Chelsea defenders Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill were not called up ahead of the tournament despite being able to play on the left side of defence.

Kieran Trippier could be an alternative option in that position, although he is a natural right-back. The Newcastle United player is set to wear the armband for Monday night’s warm-up game against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St. James’ Park.
