Tottenham take lead in race to sign England u-21 international

Tottenham Hotspur have taken the lead in the race to sign Archie Gray from Leeds United after talks over a transfer to Brentford stalled.

Leeds gave Gray permission to undergo a medical at Brentford after the Bees reached an agreement on personal terms with the player, though the deal reached a roadblock after the two teams were unable to agree a fee.

Thomas Frank’s side saw a proposal worth around £35m turned down and now look set to miss out on Gray.

Tottenham are now working on a deal to sign the 18-year-old, according to The Athletic, amid significant interest in the England u-21 international from across the Premier League.

It is understood that an agreement is expected to be reached on all sides and Gray’s preference is a move to North London if he leaves Elland Road this summer.

Gray established himself in the Leeds team last season after coming through the club’s academy ranks, following in the footsteps of his father, Andy, grandfather Frank and great uncle, Eddie, who all represented The Whites.

The midfielder made 52 appearances in all competitions as Leeds reached the Championship play-off final and was named EFL Championship Young Player of the Season.

Leeds are reluctant to lose Gray, though his sale would ease financial concerns after the club missed out on promotion to the Premier League.
