Slot discusses best role for in-form Liverpool forward Gakpo

Arne Slot has said he has his opinion on the best roles for Cody Gakpo and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool following the duo’s deployment in different positions at Euro 2024.

Alexander-Arnold has featured predominantly in central midfield for England with mixed success, starting the opening two fixtures for Gareth Southgate’s side before being dropped from the side.

Gakpo, meanwhile, has been one of the players of the tournament so far featuring from the left-wing for the Netherlands. The 24-year-old is familiar with the position from his time at PSV Eindhoven but has more often played centrally since signing for Liverpool. He is the joint-leading scorer at Euro 2024 with three goals from four games.

Slot said he will hold talks with Liverpool’s international names following this summer’s major tournaments and joked that he hopes Virgil van Dijk and Gakpo will continue impressing as the Dutch look to win a first major tournament since 1988.

“I think in general, every top player wants to win. I assume Virgil wants to win the Euros! He will come back and all these players want to win,” Slot said at a press conference.

“They all have this hunger to win. I’m hoping Gakpo will step up even more! Hopefully we see the Netherlands play England in the semi-finals. Cody is having a very good tournament.

“I don’t judge players by their best positions with their internationals as it is different to here. Different players. Different roles. I do have my opinion about where they are going to play, but I will talk to them first before saying it here!”
