UEFA have confirmed that Jude Bellingham has been handed a suspended one-game ban for his hand gesture during England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia at Euro 2024.
The governing body have said that Bellingham’s suspension is for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”, though the 21-year-old will be available to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
Bellingham’s ban is “not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period of one year”, allowing him to feature for Gareth Southgate’s side this weekend. The Real Madrid midfielder has also received a fine of €30,000.
Bellingham pretended to grab his crotch, an action that led to UEFA demanding an explanation. The England star told the governing body the act was an ‘inside joke’ to friends in attendance at the game.
UEFA have also confirmed a two-game ban for Turkey centre-back Merih Demiral with immediate effect, following his ‘wolf’ celebration – alleged to have far-right connotations – after scoring against Austria.
The defender will not be available for their quarter-final game against the Netherlands or if they proceed to the semi finals. The Turkish Federation has appealed to CAS.
