Defender determined to complete Manchester United transfer after Euros exit

Matthijs de Ligt is keen to accelerate a proposed transfer to Manchester United following the Netherlands’ elimination from Euro 2024.

Manchester United have been in negotiations to sign the Dutch defender during the tournament, with the centre-back open to a reunion with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag in the Premier League.

De Ligt fell out of favour at Bayern Munich last season to make just 16 league starts and Sky Germany are reporting that the defender has informed the Bundesliga side of his wish to complete a move to Old Trafford ‘immediately’.

The 24-year-old has snubbed rival interest from Paris Saint-Germain in favour of the Red Devils and discussions between the clubs are described as ‘advanced’. No agreement has been reached on a fee or the potential structure of a deal, but all parties are working to conclude a transfer understood to be worth in the region of €50m.

United have reached a verbal agreement on personal terms for a long-term contract with De Ligt, though no medical has been scheduled as the two teams negotiate the details of a deal.

Ten Hag turned towards De Lift after Manchester United saw an opening offer rejected for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Red Devils – who have since seen a second proposal for Branthwaite rejected – remain interested in the 21-year-old, however, in a transfer unrelated to discussions for De Ligt.
